Contacting a Chiropractor for a Spine Bulging Disc

What is a Bulging Disc?

Structure

The disc provides cushioning between two adjacent vertebras and allows for flexibility of the spine. In total there are twenty three discs that are found at intervals throughout your backbone that also serve as shock absorbers and keep together the structure of the spine. Size of these discs varies with the level of the spine. A disc is spongy in nature and has a tough cartilage called annulus fibrosus. Annulus fibrosus contains a soft jelly like material known as the nucleus pulposus.

The Bulge

Mostly a disc covers the entire space between two vertebras and is in alignment with the length and shape of the spine. A bulging disc occurs when a disc extends beyond its normal spacing. Analogically, bulging disc injuries are said to be similar to an oversized meat patty that bulges out of its bun.

When bulging disc injuries occurs, the tough outer cartilage, annulus fibrosus, expands in size.  Even after becoming oversized for the two vertebras it resides between, the nucleus pulposus (the inner jelly like material) stays in its rightful place.

Symptoms of a Bulging Disc

The Nerve Story

It is common knowledge that the spinal cord is the relay station and has nerves running through it, enabling communication to and from the brain. These are known as the spinal nerves or nerve roots. Any disturbance in a section of the spinal cord can disrupt the passageway for these nerves.

How Bulging Discs Effect the Nerves

Bulging disc injuries can easily disturb or disrupt the smooth flow of the nerve roots. When a disc spills out of its normal spacing after becoming larger in size, it pushes against the nerve causing compression. With such a disc injury, signal transmission can cause symptoms of pain to arise in several different parts of the body. It is interesting to note however that for several individuals, a bulging disc is asymptomatic.

Chiropractics and Disc Injuries

Not only are chiropractic treatments effective in dealing with bulging disc injuries, they can help reduce pain and heal the injury in the long run. Through intense physical therapy, after a thorough examination of the patient, a bulging disc condition can be resolved. Several chiropractic practitioners will often make use of machines in addition to manual therapies. For instance, a disc compression machine is often utilized with disc bulging cases. The machine is a traction that applies a controlled amount of force to the area of concern.

We hope that you will find relief for your spinal condition under a chiropractic practitioner.

Sciatica, Chiropractic and Pregnancy – What to Expect

SciaticaPregnancy.jpgSciatica – What is it?

According to chiropractic practices, Sciatica is a common type of pain that affects the sciatic nerve which is a large nerve that extends from an individual’s lower back down the back of each leg. The sciatic nerve also happens to be the largest single nerve in the human body. It is composed of individual nerve roots that branch out from the spine in the lower back and come together to form the sciatic nerve.

A person who suffers from the condition may exhibit the following symptoms –

  • Burning or tingling sensation down the leg
  • Weakness or numbness
  • Difficulty moving the leg or foot
  • Constant pain on one side of the rear
  • Shooting pain that increases when the individual tries to stand up

The pain that is associated with sciatica usually extends from the lower back through the back of the thigh and down the leg. It often occurs on one side of the body. It can also be debilitating to some. The symptoms of sciatica also vary according to where the nerve is pinched. For example, an impingement in the lumbar segment 5 (L5) can cause weakness in extending the big toe and in some cases, the ankle.

Sciatica and Pregnancy

Sciatica is also a common condition in pregnant women and usually appears during the third trimester of pregnancy. It is caused when a woman’s expanding uterus ends up putting pressure on the sciatic nerve on the lower spine. The same occurrence is also known to cause lower back pain during pregnancy. The reason the condition occurs during the third trimester is due to the fact that the growing baby shifts into the proper birthing position during this time. This makes the developing fetus rest directly on the nerve which causes the mother major pain in the buttocks. The pain also radiates to the back and legs.

The pain can be constant or intermittent depending on how many times the baby changes position. However, the lower back pain may also persist after birth.

Fortunately there are ways through which a person might be able to rid herself of the pain. Some women say that a cold or hot compress to the affected area can help lessen the pain. Just make sure that the heating pad isn’t too uncomfortably hot. Getting off your feet and walking around can also help get rid of the pain.

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

There are also patients who have sought out chiropractic services instead of opting for spinal surgery for cases such as these. It is easy to see why. Chiropractic care is non invasive and relies on the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

5 Common Symptoms of Poor Posture and How to Treat Them with Exercise

Good posture is very important when it comes to a healthy way of living.  Chiropractors help you maintaining one.  A lot of people don’t comprehend the importance of a good posture.  Some experience varying degrees of pain all over the body that gradually turns into major complications.  What people fail to realize is that the root of many of the simplest and even the complex of all health issues are usually linked to the body posture, in one way or another.

If someone is experiencing anything from the following symptoms, it would be a wise idea to get their posture evaluated to see if that is causing any of the complications.  Fortunately, a few relatively simple exercises can help in restoring the body posture and eliminate any problems associated with it.

1.    HEAD

Following symptoms may be felt in the head due to incorrect postures:

  • The person may have frequent headaches, including the ‘throbbing’ feeling
  • It feels that the head may split open
  • It feels as if something is pounding inside the head
  • The individual may suffer from dizziness and a loss of sense of balance
  • The sounds around them may seem way too loud to them along with a ringing sound in the ears

2.    EYES

The eyes may be subjected to the following:

  • The eye-sockets are painful and cause the eyes to feel sore
  • Rolling the eyes causes pain
  • Eyes lose their natural wetness
  • The vision starts to get blurry

3.    NECK

The neck is a quite sensitive area due to the passing spinal cord and is almost always affected by a bad posture.

  • Shooting neck pain
  • Muscle spasms occur regularly
  • The neck feels stiff

4.    JAW

The jaw bone is also affected by bad posture in the following way:

  • The individual may start experiencing TMJ pain
  • It gets painful to chew, and a popping sound is heard
  • The cheek muscles start to hurt
  • Shoulders are also significantly affected:
  • The person may feel pain in the socket
  • It may become difficult to raise arm or when trying to scratch the back

5.    SHOULDER

Exercise

Fortunately, before any complicated problems start happening, a chiropractor can prescribe exercises that are aimed at strengthening muscles and bones and help in restoring a proper body posture.  Many of the exercises are easy to do at home and are designed to relax stiff muscles, keep the spinal column in a correct shape and thereby improve the overall lifestyle.

Exercise is also a great way to avoid heart diseases, high blood pressures, diabetes and scores of other diseases that result from
